Biography

She was born in 1933.1 In 1968 she joined the newsroom of the Diário Popular with Margarida Silva Dias and Maria Armanda Passos, the first group of women journalists to be hired there through an open competition.1 Dismissed for insisting on writing a review of May ’68 in Paris, she moved to O Século Ilustrado and was the first woman in the newsroom of the O Século company. Before 25 April she rose to managing editor of the magazine.1

Between 1974 and 1976 she made, with Antónia de Sousa, the fortnightly RTP programme Nome Mulher (Name: Woman), about women’s problems and struggles: divorce, single mothers, cohabitation.12 On 4 February 1976 the report “O aborto não é um crime” (Abortion Is Not a Crime) went on the air.2 The programme was suspended, and the management of the Alfredo da Costa Maternity Hospital filed a complaint against her for the “illegal practice of medicine”.1 She was tried in 1979 and acquitted.231

On 13 January 1975 she stayed to the end of the Women’s Liberation Movement demonstration in Parque Eduardo VII, although she never belonged to the movement. Years later she dismissed the legend that bras had been burnt there: “It’s all lies.”3 She was the first woman vice-president of the board of the Journalists’ Union, in 1979–1980, and in 1985 she became president of the League for Women’s Rights. In 2013 she was among the women who founded the Ana de Castro Osório Specialist Library.1
