He was born in Alcochete in 1937. He was a printer, lived in his home town and is thought to have been linked to the PCP.1

On May Day (1 May) 1962, at the height of the student crisis, workers and students demonstrated in Lisbon’s Baixa against the dictatorship. In the area of Rua da Madalena and Largo do Caldas, near the Aljube, the police fired bursts of machine-gun fire at the demonstrators, and Estêvão Giro was fatally hit. He was 25.12

Notes on the sources2
  • The day of birth: the Aljube Museum gives only the year, 1937, and says he was 25 when he died, on 1 May 1962 — which requires a birth on or before 1 May 1937.
  • The exact spot where he fell: on Rua da Madalena or in Largo do Caldas.
